Case Study – System Modification

The Caterpillar D4 bulldozer in which our team is undertaking a full hydraulic modification.We are currently carrying out a specialist hydraulic modification project involving a Caterpillar D4 bulldozer. The aim is to upgrade the existing hydraulic circuit to incorporate a retractable rail wheel system, allowing the machine to operate both on standard ground and on railway tracks.

The modification focuses on adapting the bulldozer’s hydraulic system to control retractable rail guidance wheels. These wheels can be lowered when the machine needs to travel or work on railway lines and raised again for normal off-track use. This dual-purpose setup allows the bulldozer to move efficiently between rail and conventional working environments without requiring additional transport or dedicated rail-only equipment.

Our engineers are reconfiguring the hydraulic circuit to include additional control valves, hydraulic lines and actuation mechanisms. The system is being designed to integrate smoothly with the machine’s existing hydraulics while maintaining reliability, safety and operational efficiency. Careful consideration is also being given to pressure levels, flow requirements and control logic to ensure the rail wheels deploy and retract smoothly and under control.
