Carr Lane Glow Wagon Brakes Take Centre Stage

When Dave Smith attended the USITT show in St. Louis earlier this year, he was probably expecting to see new lighting and stage options that he could utilize in his position as Director of Production for The Atlantic Opera. What he didn’t expect to discover was an all‐new product that would greatly improve the safety of his stage hands and improve the ease with which sets can be moved and placed during a production. What was this new product that debuted at USITT (which stands for United States Institute for Theatre Technology, Inc.)? Simply put, an innovative take on a popular piece of set design: the wagon brake.

“I’ve been doing this for 20 years and wagon brakes are wagon brakes,” Smith said in an interview. When he passed Carr Lane’s booth at the USITT show, where the Glow Wagon Brakes debuted, he thought to himself, “WHY the heck has no one done this?” He then went on “This is brilliant, in the past, I’ve taken glow tape and taped it onto the handles so you could see them in the dark; so you didn’t run your shins into them.” Smith said he was simply blown away by the simplicity of Carr Lane Manufacturing’s Glow Wagon Brake idea. And unlike glow tape, Carr Lane’s Glow Wagon Brakes’ special handles glow in the dark for at least 8 hours.

Smith has utilized two Glow Wagon Brakes from Carr Lane Manufacturing, including for performances of Turandot, part of The Atlanta Opera’s 2017 season.
